SICILY. Katane. Circa 412-403 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 16.31 g, 1 h), obverse die signed by Herakleidas. Charioteer driving quadriga galloping to left, holding kentron in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right, crowning the charioteer with a wreath; in exergue, [H]. Rev. KATANAIΩN Head of Apollo to left, wearing taenia. Gulbenkian 187 (same dies). HGC 2, 573 (same dies, but with crayfish added to the reverse). Jameson 544 var. (same dies, but with crayfish added to the reverse). Rizzo pl. XIV, 2 (same dies). SNG ANS 1259 (same dies). Rare. Beautifully toned and with a fine pedigree. Some tooling in Apollo's hair, otherwise, very fine.
